  1. I found this sentence and it seems to me that advantages is used as if it was advantage. I tried to google but no results for the plural used this way. I mean the meaning is quite clear but still...

    "this commodity lends itself admirably to become the object of syndicates, trusts, speculation of various kinds [and] to the advantages of a few middlemen". I don't understand why the author has added the [and] either...

    I would translate..."...speculazioni di vario tipo a vantaggio di pochi intermediari"

    I think the sentence is perhaps meant to be read like this:

    this commodity lends itself admirably (1) to become the object of syndicates, trusts, speculation of various kinds, and (2) to the advantages of a few middlemen.

    If you interpret it this way, the "and" is absolutely necessary. I too don't like the plural "advantages", even with the different interpretation.
